Matt Hopkins

Division Chief Science Excellence & Partnering

Matt Hopkins joined NZDF in 1994 as a science researcher in the Ocean Engineering team. He subsequently led that section from 1996, managing the development and testing of under-sea measurement systems. In 2000 Matt seconded to the UK and joined a team developing advanced technology for underwater sensing.

On returning to NZ Matt led and mentored a team of science and technical specialists who collaborated with partners to tackled challenges covering cyber security, next-generation networks, and communications assurance. Matt also chaired an international technical panel researching advanced cybersecurity technologies and approaches.

For over 20 years Matt has worked across government departments, industry, and academia, forming new productive communities that continue to bear fruit for all to bear fruit for all parties involved, including NZDF. In 2022 Matt seconded to New Zealand Customs Service to provide science leadership and broaden his professional experience across government. 

In early 2023 Matt took on the newly established role of Division Chief, Science Excellence & Partnering, at Defence Science & Technology (DST).

Matt Hopkins holds a MSc from the University of Otago, a BSc from Massey University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration from Massey University.
