Dr Jovan Skuljan (2nd from right in photo), a senior scientist at DST, has led the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) research in space situational awareness (SSA), a crucial and emerging capability for Defence. Recognising its potential nearly a decade ago, Dr Skuljan identified SSA not only as a valuable standalone function but also as a means for New Zealand to contribute meaningfully to international partnerships. He has collaborated closely with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) to transition his research into a demonstrated capability, culminating in a successful SSA sensor trial.
Throughout this process, Dr Skuljan delivered exceptional scientific outputs. He also devoted substantial personal time to designing and delivering a training course for RNZAF personnel, guiding them from students to fully capable operators. His tireless support was instrumental in the trial’s success. The NZDF Space Programme, now 62 Squadron, acknowledged his work as a critical enabler of their space objectives. This trial, grounded in Dr. Skuljan’s foresight and perseverance, laid the foundation for the NZDF’s entry into space operations and marks a significant contribution. Dr Skuljan is a deserving recipient of the New Zealand Defence Force Commendation.
DST science researcher, John Ferguson (2nd from left in photo), also received a special award for his contributions to the NZDF space programme. John's technical contributions have been significant, developing much of the software for the Korimako and Tui payloads and associated ground infrastructure.
Jovan and John were honoured at a special ceremony, where Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Rear Admiral Mat Williams, presented them with their awards.
